Unconditional Love
Jeremiah 31: 3 “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.”
Sometimes we think that the love of God is one sided; that He loves us when we are good, but He doesn’t when we are not. So we try to buy God's love and forgiveness by our work.
When we were growing up we were taught, sometimes not directly, that apostle Paul had to suffer all he did as a believer because of his former sins. We were taught that sin is like a wound, although it heals, there will always be a scar. Well that notion has been embedded into some of us, that it becomes difficult to accept God's unconditional love.
We constantly live in self doubt even after salvation, asking questions like “how can God love someone like me, after this” or “there has to be some price I must pay to truly get his love (like what Jesus did was not enough)”. Well God can, and He continues to love you.
You can’t come to Christ by your power, so when you begin to think that there’s another price you have to pay to receive God's love, that’s not from God.
God's love is not a function of circumstance, but a function of His nature; 1John 4: 8 "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” That is why He cannot change. He loves you not because of what you can or will do, but because of who He is. So why do you condemn yourself, when God has already justified you (forgiven you of the guilt of sin and placed you in right standing with Him). Acts 13:39 says “and through Him everyone who believes [who acknowledges Jesus as Lord and Savior and follows Him] is justified and declared free of guilt from all things.”
God also tells us in His Word; 2 Cor. 5:17, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].”
And in Rom 8:1 “Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].”
To believe that God keeps a mental note of all your transgressions so that after you have given your life to Him He can bring the repercussions on you, will be contrary to His nature and Word. He's love is unconditional!
Love.
